Permitting Process
Carolinas Cement must secure permits in two major areas before beginning plant construction:
- Air Permit from the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources (Division of Air Quality)
- Wetlands permits from the federal government (Corps of Engineers) and the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR).
As part of the permitting process, Carolinas Cement is conducting extensive environmental impact studies:
- Intertox, a scientific consulting and research firm, conducted an independent risk assessment of the potential mercury emissions of the proposed plant. Click here to get the final report.
- Kimley-Horn Associates, an engineering and land planning firm, is conducting an extensive environmental impact study on the wetlands surrounding the proposed site.
- Environmental Banc and Exchange (EBX) is assisting Carolinas Cement in identifying mitigation opportunities.
- Throughout this process, we will collaborate with the Corps of Engineers, state regulations and conservation groups to develop an approach that meets overall mitigation strategies and conservation goals.
