Carolinas Cement's Oct. 27 community workshop highlights corporate citizenship initiatives

Third workshop to feature life-size eco-friendly robot

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The third Community Information Workshop hosted by Carolinas Cement will take place on Oct. 27 at the UNCW Executive Development Center on Military Cutoff, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshops are free and open to the public.

The newest feature of the third workshop is a 6-foot-tall, 400-pound Robotic Artificial Life Form named R.A.L.F. R.A.L.F. was created by Separation Technologies LLC, a subsidiary of Titan America, as a corporate citizenship initiative to educate students around the country about the importance of sustaining the environment. R.A.L.F.'s Bright Green initiative promotes small changes in children's daily lives, which will have a larger impact on the future of the environment. Separation Technologies oversees the process of separating fly ash from coal combustion used to power the utility industry and recycles it for commercial applications, rather than disposing it in landfills.

"Pinky," the pink concrete mixer truck, another Titan corporate citizenship initiative, will be back in Wilmington for the Oct. 27 workshop, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. "Pinky" was spearheaded in 2008 by a Titan employee and breast cancer survivor to help spread awareness of breast cancer and early detection. In April of this year, "Pinky" took to the highways for daily concrete deliveries in the Hampton Roads, Va. area, and has since made special appearances at hospitals, American Cancer Society and Komen Foundation for the Cure events. "Pinky" made its first visit to Wilmington on Oct. 7 for Carolinas Cement's Community Information Workshop at Cape Fear Community College's Schwartz Center in downtown Wilmington.

During the October 27 workshop, industry experts and company representatives will provide attendees with an overview of the Carolinas Cement project and answer any questions they may have. In addition to Titan employees, experts in economics, toxicology and hydrology will also be on hand at the workshop to answer attendees' questions. These experts include Andrew Brod, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro; Rick Pleus, Ph.D., Managing Director and toxicologist at Intertox, a Seattle-based scientific consulting and research firm; and Richard Spruill, Ph.D., a technical advisor in the field of groundwater hydrology and Associate Professor of Geology at East Carolina University.

Carolinas Cement Company is a subsidiary of Titan America LLC. Titan America LLC is headquartered in Norfolk, Va. and is one of the premier heavy building materials producers in the eastern United States. Titan America operations include cement plants, ready-mixed concrete plants, concrete block plants, quarries, import and rail terminals and fly ash beneficiation facilities. About Pinky
In March 2007, Cheri Strain, Business Center Administrator at Titan Va. Ready Mix, was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was a very frightening time for her as she had lost her mother after a four-year battle with breast cancer. During her recuperation from surgery, she wanted to somehow figure out how she could help make people aware of this horrible disease.

Then it came to her, what better way to "spread" the word than on a concrete mixer truck! She approached the General Manager, Dan Osborne, in April and asked if they could get one of their trucks painted pink and have it display "breast cancer awareness" to make people aware of this disease. He told her to get all the information needed and get backwith him. She called the company that paints the Ready Mix trucks, Van Wynn Coating, and explained to him what she wanted. She forwarded him pictures of a pink truck that is being used in Bridgeview, Ill.

After discussing what she wanted, she asked VanWynn Coating if they would do this as a donation and they agreed. After months of talking to Dan Osborne and getting all the information needed, the pink truck arrived at Campostella, Va. on April 10, 2008! The lettering, ribbon and Titan logo for the truck took approximately eight hours to apply. Titan's mechanics worked long hours making sure that all the mechanics of the truck were in top shape.

To date, Pinky has made appearances at:
  • Virginia Beach General Hospital to have her picture taken with the employees of the hospital that are currently going through or have gone through the journey
  • Titan Roadeo in May
  • Relay for Life in Norfolk
  • Komen Foundation for the Cure (Old Timers Basketball Tournament at Oscar Smith High School and the Norfolk Tides "Bat for a Cure")
  • The funeral procession of one of Titan's drivers that recently passed
  • A survivor's luncheon in Virginia Beach
Future appearances include: Other than these special appearances, Pinky is used daily in delivering concrete in the Hampton Roads, Va. area. The driver of Pinky, had a sister in law pass from breast cancer and he said that he is proud to drive her everyday
