Experts to answer public's questions at first Carolinas Cement workshop on Sep. 16
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The first of three Community Information Workshops hosted by Carolinas Cement will take place on Sep. 16 at Cape Fear Community College's North Branch from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshops are free and open to the public. Carolinas Cement is a subsidiary of Titan America LLC.
Industry experts and company representatives will provide attendees with an overview of the Carolinas Cement project and answer any questions they may have. The workshop will cover a broad range of issues, but will focus on seven primary topics, including Economic Impact, Employment Opportunities, Environmental Stewardship, the Permitting Process, Company History, Cement Production and Community Stewardship.
"Since this plant project was first announced in April of this year, we have met with hundreds of people throughout the community - including the opposition groups - to explain who we are and why we believe this plant will be a great asset to the community," said Kate McClain, communications manager for Titan America. "These Community Information Workshops are an extension of that ongoing effort and we encourage everyone to come out and learn more about our company."
Employees from Titan America and its two plants in Roanoke, Va. and Medley, Fla. will be available to discuss the project with attendees. A number of industry experts will also be on hand to discuss broader issues, such as economics and toxicology. For instance, Andrew Brod, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will staff the "Economic Impact" station to explain his analysis of the economic impact the plant will have on the community.
Rick Pleus, Ph.D., managing director and toxicologist at Intertox, a Seattle-based scientific consulting and research firm, will staff the "Environmental Stewardship" station. Dr. Pleus, who is conducting an independent risk assessment of the potential mercury emissions of the proposed cement plant, will answer questions about mercury and its impact.
