Carolinas Cement's Oct. 7 community workshop highlights sustainability and prevalence of concrete
Workshop will also feature pink concrete mixer named Pinky
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The second Community Information Workshops hosted by Carolinas Cement will take place on Oct. 7 at Cape Fear Community College's Schwartz Center on N. Front Street in downtown Wilmington, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshops are free and open to the public.
Following a similar format to the company's first workshop on Sep. 16, this workshop will share a new focus on sustainability and how concrete is a part of our daily lives, and will introduce Pinky, a breast cancer awareness-raising concrete mixing truck.
A sustainability-themed exhibit will be added to the seven informational stations on Economic Impact, Employment Opportunities, Environmental Stewardship, the Permitting Process, Company History, Cement Production and Community Involvement. The new exhibit will feature examples of how concrete is used in our daily lives and as a green building product. Company experts will be on hand to answer attendees' questions about how cement and concrete play a viable role in green building and overall sustainability.
An important Titan America corporate citizenship initiative will roll into Wilmington for the Oct. 7 workshop, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. A Titan Ready Mix employee and breast cancer survivor spearheaded a program this year to commission a pink concrete mixer truck. In April, "Pinky" hit the roads for daily concrete deliveries in the Hampton Roads, Va. area, while making special appearances at hospitals, American Cancer Society and Komen Foundation for the Cure events.
As in the first workshop, industry experts and company representatives will provide attendees with an overview of the Carolinas Cement project and answer any questions they may have. Independent experts retained by Carolinas Cement, who will appear at the workshop include Andrew Brod, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Rick Pleus, Ph.D., Managing Director and toxicologist at Intertox, a Seattle-based scientific consulting and research firm.
Following the Oct. 7 workshop, the public will have another opportunity to speak to Carolinas Cement representatives and independent experts. The Oct. 27 workshop will be at the UNCW Executive Development Center on Military Cutoff Road, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
